Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign

I had to do some deep thinking for this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreign.  Although my job presents a lot of opportunities to travel, I don’t really enjoy travelling much, so I seldom leave Canada.  In fact, I seldom leave the ‘Cat Ranch’ – a little country oasis just outside of Edmonton (a city of about a million people on the Canadian Prairies).  But I did visit London, England and, compared to Edmonton, it was totally foreign to me – so here are a few of the photos that captured that feeling.

Of course, as a civil engineer, the first thing that caught my eye in London was the famous Tower Bridge which, according to Wikipedia,  was built from 1886 to 1894. I actually thought it was a lot older than that but, even at just 118 years old, it’s very classy looking.

We have a bridge here in Edmonton that was built around the same time (1900) – the Low Level bridge (now that’s a real original name!) – and it is pretty darn boring looking in comparison, though this flood photo is pretty cool.

London has some pretty exotic newer bridges, too.   I am not sure I even like this one – it looked especially foreign to me…

We too have new pedestrian bridges here in Edmonton –  but they’re a bit more conventional looking. Now our sister city, Calgary, is a bit more daring – their newest pedestrian bridge looks pretty foreign to me, too!

Even the buildings in London looked foreign to me…  I actually kind of liked this one though.

Edmonton too tries to get cute like this, but we only embarrass ourselves.  Check out this link if you think I am exaggerating.  It leaves me speechless!    Maybe London wasn’t all that foreign to me after all…  😉
